Medina Cafe is one of downtown Vancouver’s best brunch spots. They are good at so many things. Their waffles are very popular as well as their brunch menu influenced by Mediterranean flavours.
As soon as you walk into Medina Cafe, you see their Belgian waffle display. There are a slew of toppings and sauces you can choose from for your waffle.
We went with the real Maple syrup, salted caramel and mixed berry compote for our waffles. We warmed up on this cold December afternoon with a chai latte and white hot chocolate.
Their chai lattes are my absolute favourite. Not only are they incredibly beautiful, their taste is just what I want in my chai.
Our brunch dishes, the Fricassée at the top and Paella at the bottom.
The Fricassée was ultimate comfort food. It had melt in your mouth braised short ribs with roasted potatoes, applewood cheddar, arugula and 2 fried eggs. Everything went together like a good marriage. The housemade foccacia bread was good for sopping up the sauce and yolk leftover in the bottom of the dish.
The Paella was spicy and bright. It had chorizo sauce mixed into orzo pasta. Usually Paella is made with rice but I loved Medina’s take on it. The tomatoes, herbs and avocado all went together nicely with the fried egg. This dish was very different that the Fricassée and I liked the vast contrast between the 2.
Medina is an extremely popular place amongst locals and tourists. If you are into celebrity sightings, I saw an Hollywood actress walking out of here as we were waiting for our table. They are open daily til 3pm only and if you are going on the weekend, be prepared to wait or go early. Medina’s comforting yet exotic flavours will have you coming back for more like me.
